Leading Evidence-Based Practice
Although it is widely known that evidence-based practice (EBP) improves healthcare quality, reliability, and patient outcomes as well as reduces variations in care and costs, it is still not the standard of care delivered by practicing clinicians. Nurses and nurse leaders need a deep and operational knowledge of EBP to access and implement proven strategies, while also improving quality and engagement.
About the Program
In collaboration with the Fuld Institute for Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) at The Ohio State University, ONL is excited to provide this highly-rated three-part interactive leadership development program for nurse leaders seeking to gain a deep and operational knowledge of EBP.
What Participants Can Expect
- Learn how a leader creates a vision, builds team engagement, and develops practices to improve quality through the evolution and importance of EBP
- Assess key elements of your organization, including the relationship between culture and the change process
- Explore personal leadership strengths and discern how key attributes of leadership styles can be leveraged to drive EBP on units and in organizations
- Assess common barriers to implementation of EBP in real-world settings and develop strategies to effectively build competence and engagement while implementing EBP
- Learn how to frame clinical and leadership questions and discover successful strategies for finding the best evidence to inform practice
- Learn how to differentiate, construct and critique the components of an effective PICOT question to support EBP practice change and staff engagement in the process
- Describe the process of critical appraisal and evaluation of evidence
- Analyze key checkpoints in planning an EBP change and compose strategies for implementation
- Learn how to measure outcomes and track external benchmarks that impact healthcare organizations
- Create an outcomes and evaluation plan for a sample EBP project

Program Details
- This workshop series includes three sessions held virtually via Zoom. Participants must participate in all three sessions.
- Attendees are eligible for 16.5 Contact Hours upon completion of the full program.
- Individual registration fee is $999 per person.

Lynn Gallagher-Ford PhD, RN, NE-BC, DPFNAP, FAAN
Chief Operating Officer and Clinical Core Director
Fuld National Institute for EBP at The Ohio State University
Lynn Gallagher-Ford is chief operating officer and clinical core director of the Fuld National Institute for EBP, where her work is dedicated to research, education and consultation focused on the development, promotion, integration, implementation and sustainability of evidence-based practice in both academic and clinical settings.
Gallagher-Ford’s clinical background in maternal-child health and nursing administration spans 30 years. She served in a variety of roles ranging from bedside clinician to chief nursing officer, in which she gained extensive experience and expertise in teaching and implementing evidence-based practice in real-world clinical settings. Gallagher-Ford is currently active as a consultant, facilitator and keynote presenter at national and international conferences and education programs.
Gallagher-Ford co-edited the book Implementing the EBP Competencies in Healthcare: A Practical Guide for Improving Quality, Safety & Outcomes. Her publications include co-authorship of multiple studies that have had a dramatic impact on the current body of knowledge about evidence-based practice and influenced strategic imperatives to address new challenges. She also contributed as a lead author in the American Journal of Nursing EBP Series, which received the Sigma Theta Tau Publication Award for 2011.
She serves as assistant editor of Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing and is the editor of the column “Implementing and Sustaining EBP in Real-World Healthcare Settings,” which features best evidence-based strategies and innovative ideas on how to promote and sustain evidence-based practices and cultures in clinical organizations.
Gallagher-Ford’s research is focused on the science behind evidence-based practice, with particular focus on the influence of nurse leaders and contextual issues. She was inducted into the National Academies of Practice and the Nursing Academy as a Distinguished Practitioner and Fellow in 2013 and the American Academy of Nursing as a fellow in 2017.

Karey Dufour DNP, RN, MA, ACNSBC, CEN, EBP-C, USAF Col (ret)
Clinical Core Assistant Director
Fuld National Institute for EBP at The Ohio State University
Karey Dufour is an assistant director of the Clinical Core at the Fuld National Institute for EBP. She taught and served as a facilitator for the EBP immersion since 2014 and has conducted or mentored several evidence-based practice initiatives during her Air Force career. Previously, she was assigned as a medical inspector, medical operations directorate, Headquarters Air Force Inspection Agency, at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico. She led teams that conducted the Medical Component of the Air Force Inspection System. She retired from the United States Air Force as a colonel in June 2021. Dufour has been a nurse for over 26 years.
Dufour received her BSN from the University of Maine, a Master of Arts in Management/Business Management from Webster University, a Master of Science in Nursing from Wright State University and a Master of Strategic Studies from the Air War College. She obtained her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Wright State University. She is a certified Adult-Gerontological Clinical Nurse Specialist with a sub-specialization in flight and disaster nursing. Her expertise includes trauma/emergency nursing, relations and human capital management, executive medicine, disaster management, leadership development, team building, academia and curriculum development.

Enthusiasm for the Leading EBP Program

"I put forward a business plan for my organization to sponsor two attendees at ONL’s Leading EBP program this fall and it was immediately approved. I believe the success of this request was directly tied to three factors. First, I am trying to build capacity in my team and do some succession planning, which involves some specific education. Second, the ONL EBP program provides very strong content and a virtual format that would not require travel, so it is desirable when compared to other similar programs. Lastly, we have a clinical need to look at the best evidence around skin integrity and management of incontinence in our patient population.
